Sexual assault / abuse is not about sex; it is about power.
Sexual assault / sexual abuse is a crime of violent intent, where offenders view the assault as a way to gain power and control in their own lives. Sexual assault / sexual abuse can range from coercive exposure to pornography and inappropriate sexual behaviors to uninvited touching that may include forced sexual intercourse.
No, all CASASC counseling services are free to our clients.
Yes, all counseling is confidential. The client signs an ”Informed Consent“ document which includes all information regarding confidentiality.

How frequent will my appointments be and how many will I have?
There is a limit of 15 sessions offered to each individual counselling client. The timing of your appointments will be decided between you and your counsellor and may also be affected by CASASC current wait times.
Are referrals/reports needed to access counselling?
No, referrals are not needed. We do not require any formal or informal referrals from doctors, social workers, teachers, police, child and family services or any other organization/service.
No, reporting is not needed, individuals are not required to have gone through a reporting process, you do not need a police report, a CFS report or be engaged in the criminal justice system at all.

Does CASASC provide counselling for offenders of sexual violence?
No, CASASC does not provide counselling services to offenders of sexual violence. Offender services are available in the larger centers of Edmonton and Calgary.

How do I know if I am ready for counselling?
It takes a lot of courage to reach out for help after sexual violence has happened. To know if you are ready to start counselling, it’s important that you are willing to trust the process. Our clinicians work at your pace and equip you with strategies and tools to aid in your healing journey after the assault and you will get out of therapy what you put into it. By committing to regular appointments, being honest with yourself and your therapist, and being open to support, you will see a change.
Can CASASC provide day/child care?
No CASASC does not provide child care, please make alternative arrangements for the care of your children during your counselling session(s).
Do you have male and female counsellors?
At this time we have both male and female counsellors.
Do you have Psychologists on staff?
CASASC staff are all experienced counselors with a solid understanding in regards to the issues concerning sexual assault /sexual abuse. Current staff backgrounds include RSWs, BA Psych, registered provisional psychologists and therapists.
I live out of town and do not have access to transportation. Will CASASC assist me to get to my appointments?
No, unfortunately CASASC does not provide transportation to appointments. We do offer virtual counselling options through phone or video call.
How long will we need to wait for an appointment for my child?
Wait times may vary but are generally between 4-6 weeks.
Who provides children’s counseling?
CASASC has two play therapists on staff who have many years of experience working with children who have experienced sexual abuse.
Does CASASC provide Speakers / Education sessions to community groups?
Yes, for more information or to book a speaker you can contact us online, by email (education@casasc.ca) or phone (403-340-1124) and an educator will contact you as soon as possible. CASASC educators will come out to make a presentation at schools, youth groups, and community groups at no cost.
Does CASASC provide age specific educational programming for children?
Yes, CASASC has an Educator team that provides programing to children and youth from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We can also provide programs for post-secondary, adults and community groups.
Is there a cost to book education?
No, the service is free but, as a not-for-profit CASASC is happy to accept donations and honorariums whenever possible.
What is the meaning of the CASASC logo?
The Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre logo was introduced in the spring of 2012. The two ‘individuals’, arms raised to the sky represent healing and wellness. The colour green symbolizes growth, stability and endurance and the blue, faith, trust, healing and understanding.
